Text made of rock

I have created another "stone text".

It was just an enjoy to show you. I'm very busy dealing with a bug in my (old) rasterizer that happens when I fill hierarchical polygons.

I need to fix this bug, since the task to create a new rasterizer with my own math models is suspended, and I don't know when I will have time to go back to it. Probably this task would last months and I don't know if it will work.

Creating ice text (once more)

I have made a new effect for creating text made of ice. In fact, it's a text made digging ice (the text is ice hole) .

I'm still researching to discover new ways to produce ice.

Creating ice text

I had already made an effect for ice text (it's shown below in an old post; can you find it?), but I created other one.

I intend to make at least 4 different styles for ice text, since designers love this kind of tool.

I'm working to make several other things now (beside the tasks I stopped for a while):
- more nature like text effects;
- intelligent filters for softness;
- filtering with arbitrary masks.

Pencil drawing in flavors

Now the pencil drawing effect has a new flavor. This new one makes a lot of extra calculations to don't let strokes to destroy mid-tone regions and also to show representative lines in a better way.

The images show an example where using this "smarter" pencil drawer can be interesting (second image has the old effect and third has the new one). Anyway, it's not always the best choice. Images with very high values in frequency domain usually don't give a very beautiful result with this new option.

Here I show a new example of transforming a photo in "human made like" pencil drawing.

The images aren't reduced in this view, so it's easier to see (no click needed to get the "real" result).

Pencil drawing effect

I have just finished my effect to transform photos in pencil drawings.

This new effect is pretty good, but it's not all. I'm very excited because the math model I created for this artistic transformation looks to be very strong and useful. Probably I will be able to use it as base for new very interesting effects.

The images show a wolf photo and its pencil draw. Click on the image to see it larger, so you will can see it really looks like a draw made by human hands using a pencil.

Comparing Cartoonization styles

The images show you the use of both cartoonizations in a very detailed image with some regions of high contrast and some regions of very low contrast.

Which effect have given the best result is a matter of opinion. Anyway, it's easy to see the option that fits your needs depends on features of input photo and the goals you have.

I'm still working hard to get a killer effect for transforming photos in pencil drawings.

Tranforming photos in pencil drawings

So now I have a sketch effect and that's good. To be a sketch, I made this effect kind of intrusive and destructive. This way, the properties a human made sketch has can be highlighted in result.

Despite the interesting result, after I showed this effect, many people have asked me about a real pencil drawing. You give a photo as input and get it drawn by pencil keeping the most important original information (something better than a sketch).

Given to applications, I'm working on a effect for transforming photos in pencil drawings. I hope it will be nice. More news in next days.

A new cartoonization effect

I have just created a new math model to make cartoonization.

The first model is nice and I will keep it, but it's very hard fit all kinds of images with just one model. The new model is worse in some points, but it doesn't have the only big problem the older one has: great lost of mid-tone information.

This new model usually is more useful for photos with at least 1 of 2 properties:
- high detail level;
- low contrast.

If the input photo has both features, so probably this new effect can be even more useful.

The example shows you a canonical use of this new model: it tries to keep most of original photo details (we miss this details even more since most of them are geometric). The older model is more stylistic, but can not cartoonize this photo keeping a high detail level.

Transforming photos in pencil sketches

I have just finished the first version of the sketch effect. Now you can transform a photo in a pencil sketch.

I intend to make this kind of effect in other flavors, like representing other drawing styles. I'm still researching about that.

Concerning the example above, for best results, I made a simple preprocessing of original photo before applying the effect:

- made it gray;

- improved its contrast.

As you can see, the result gives a nice sketch with no falsehood. The pencil strokes are really there.
